Film fest kicks off with shades of change

For a Kolkata Film Festival regular, the inauguration of the 17th edition of the event was an evening of many firsts.
From overtly cautious policemen around Netaji Indoor Stadium to enthusiastic journalists milling around the VIP entrance for the red (cleverly replaced with blue in this case) carpet bites, Kolkata got a good dose of showbiz blitzkrieg.
The evening began with cameras trailing Tollywood celebs paparazzi-style, the stadium floor slowly filling up with rustling silks, spiffy blazers, et al.
As the crowd - filling the stadium almost to capacity - spotted their favourite stars, they broke into loud cheers, a distinct departure from the sombre, esoteric inaugural ceremonies the Left Front government was known for.
In the motley crowd of Tollywood stars, whose allegiance to Mamata Banerjee is an open secret, were spotted Left-inclined Sunil Gangopadhyay, Sankho Ghosh and Sirshendu Mukherjee.
